Salamiski [Marketplace] Empty Salamiski [Marketplace]

Post by Ness Sat Jan 09, 2016 10:41 am

Usually the most crowded central area of the city, the Salamiski marketplace also happens to be the single largest open space available for interactions between not only vendors and their customers, but also between a variety of artists, musicians, beggars, bellmen, and of course, guards.
Vendor stalls were set up in neat rows and at the end of the market, a church with spires scratching at the heavens overlooked the exchanges between mortal men. Many of the stalls boasted displays of fresh foods, clothing, or other simple yet necessary goods. It was to be expected that vendors selling more expensive goods, such as the jeweler or blacksmith, maintained shops elsewhere in the city, where thievery was less rampant.

As he approached the central aisle of stalls, Dmitri threaded his way through the thickening crowd as a shadow would between cracked brick on an overcast day. He felt the small package of herbs he had received crinkle with his every step, and took care to tuck them closer against himself.

It was by far the most noise the man had exposed himself to for a long time, and he wished only to purchase the necessary groceries before making a quick escape. In fact, he had a short list scrawled out on parchment, which he pulled out at this moment:

  • Seeds - spring, so cabbage, spinach, squash (?)
  • Cloth (may also need sewing kit, old one rusty)
  • Salted meat
  • Glass jars (try to find larger ones this time to save space)
  • Leather strips and rope
  • New shovel and perhaps a better hoe if any K left over

With a slight scowl, he realized that he couldn't remember where to find the vendors of most these items. Oh well, there was the rest of the day for that, he supposed.

Salamiski [Marketplace] Empty Re: Salamiski [Marketplace]

Several minutes pass before Erik spots a boy pushing a scrap-filled cart. He follows it with his eyes as it rattles past, taking note of several items in the heap. There is a dirty collection of old knife blades, a dented candelabra, and several unidentified chunks of metal. He smiles to himself, weighing the evidence. This scavenger would likely be peddling to a steelyard, or potentially even to a blacksmith. Either way, this was a good lead with which to start.

At this moment, the cart was headed northwest, towards the marketplace. He was going to have to hurry if he didn't want to be left behind in the shifting crowd.

Silently rising, Erik pulls his hood up as he turns to follow the cart.

What in the world was a broccoli? Dmitri was marvelling at the strange plant presented to him by the farmer. It appeared to have the leaves of a giant weed, with some great blossoming bush in the middle of the mess. Surely this wasn't a crop that could grow in the subzero climate of the region?

He swept his hands in a few circles and showed the man the rest of his list, hoping to communicate something along the lines of 'I will come back later after I do some other shopping.'

The man nodded amiably regardless, but a muscle was tight in his jaw and Dmitri decided that he should move on lest he keep other customers away from the booth any longer. The next item on his list was cloth, and it was just his luck that he had forgotten where the cheaper tailor shops were found.

Noticing the boy stopped near an alleyway, Erik pulls down his hood and slips a Kolbasa into his palm, approaching the lad with a warm smile. "Hey, little buddy. I think you dropped something." He holds up the coin, and the youth shakes his head vigorously. "Don't worry kid, it's yours." He saunters up to the cart, but the youth steps back, hesitating. "I don't appreciate the knife, mister." Erik lets out a small laugh, remembering the blade tied at his waist. "Smart kid. Tell you what, if you can tell me where I can find a blacksmith, I'll drop you this coin. If you can give me a name, I'll throw in one more."

The youth considers for a moment, and answers, "There's one on the other side of the market, near the textiles. The building's the one with the tall chimney that's always smoking." Erik grins, tossing the coin in a gentle arc onto the scrap cart. "Any names?" The youth glances around nervously. "Not that I know of. I'm sure you can ask around, though." Nodding, Erik chuckles. "It's what I do."

The youth watches him cautiously as he leaves. Pulling his hood up, Erik slips quietly into the crowd, setting out towards the colorful cloth-draped shops of the textile district.

Salamiski [Marketplace] Empty Re: Salamiski [Marketplace]

Post by Ness Fri May 20, 2016 12:19 am

There was no way he could keep going. Dmitri looked down the street with an expression of equal parts desperation and horror. He could see the small first-generation old store which was sure to have the cheap cloths he needed, but... everything in this district was simply so clean. There were no alcoves to shelter him from detection, nor any alleyways to catch his breath should he have to run.
Worse still, there were much fewer civilian crowds drifting about, as they would in the central marketplace. He barely managed to yank his hood down over his face as another party of guards marched by. This would simply not do.

Unfortunately, in his indecision, he unintentionally made himself more and more conspicuous to those around him. The only things keeping those around him from confronting him about being stopped in the middle of the street, were his haggard looks and ever-present reek.

While he stood paused, a trio of children ran by, chasing after a runaway chicken. Neither of them cared to avoid him as they charged past, knocking Dmitri off balance over his lame leg.

He fell to the ground with a grunt, air whooshing out of his lungs while his vision was turned sideways. Opting to avoid crushing the herbs he had earlier received, he was unable to catch his purse as well, and he cursed as he realized that its drawstring had come apart on impact. Several delicately minted coins scattered, just out of reach.

Dmitri immediately scrambled to recollect them, ducking and wincing around the uncaring feet around him. It was more humiliating than coming to the city in the first place, but he grit his teeth and counted up the coins which were meant to barely afford his year's worth of necessities.

Post by Gadnalf Sat May 21, 2016 12:19 am

Noticing a disgusting beggar-man struggling about in an adjacent side-alley, Erik pauses slightly, wondering at him. His clothes are worn and filthy, and he moves with the grace of a fish that has run short of water. The entire scene evokes mingled disgust and pity, and Erik is about to leave when he hears a muffled grunt, and the distinct clatter of coins upon the pavement. He turns to see the beggar knocked to the ground, struggling to collect several spilled coins. While his predicament does nothing to soothe Erik's rising disgust, he does notice the considerable size and roundness of his purse. Hmph, perhaps this man was worth talking to after all..

Steeling himself, Erik loosens his stride and adopts a relaxed smile, sauntering up and tapping the figure on the shoulder. Clearing his throat, he says, "Hey bud. Are you a little lost?"

Startling, Dmitri jerked upwards, eyes snapping to meet the stranger's with nothing less than a hoarse 'huh?" of surprise. The last of the scattered coins fell still in his hands. As his own widened blue met stony grey, he let his shoulders drop in relief, that it was simply a civilian (albeit sickly-looking) that had stumbled upon him. He pushed himself to his feet and regained his bearings, coin purse still dangling in one hand, but with the loose pieces secured.

It took a few rasps before he gave up on trying sentences and instead, held up his shopping list. He pointed outwards to the clean streets of the textiles district, and then to himself, what with his worn-down cloak and unkempt brown hair.

Following the direction of the man's pointing arm, Erik looked past all the miscellaneous stalls and shops to spot.. smoke, and a building with a distinctly tall chimney. This weak, haggard creature wasn't anywhere near his description of the blacksmith, so perhaps he was a customer? He seemed to have the K to afford it, after all.

Erik placed a reassuring hand on the beggars shoulder with a loose grin, asking, "Are you headed that way to buy something? I can escort you there, if you'd like."

Dmitri was skeptical as to whether he should take on a companion or not, but ultimately ruled in favor for, as he had no wish to brave the crowds or guard patrols again, alone.

He held up the list once more, pointing at the items on the list which seemed to be available where they were headed, rasping out the sounds "Leath" and "Shove".
After all, a smithery in this location should be well-equipped to sell basic farming tools and material.

This time, walking through the crowd was less difficult with someone else to help forge through the opposing flow of clamoring bodies.

Post by Gadnalf Mon May 23, 2016 2:00 am

As Erik led the man out of the alley back into the shifting crowds, he started to notice a certain unease forming in the back of his mind. This man, this haggard creature, was no ordinary man. He could feel it. He could feel the man's presence everywhere, as if it was a cloud that hung around him. It filled him with a deep foreboding, instilling a certain heaviness in his surroundings.

There was more to it, as well -- a certain tension hung in the air, as if suddenly it would all snap apart and the sky would come crashing down about them. He continues to walk in a slight daze, hardly trying to force his way through the crowd, but it is surprisingly easy. He vaguely notices that the push of the crowd had lessened, and the people immediately surrounding them had almost stopped moving, preferring to stand and watch their passing in discomfort.

Gradually returning to reality, Erik notices that they have almost reached the smithery. Shaking his head, Erik clears his throat, trying to gather his broken concentration. Looking back at the man, he smiles again as reassuringly as he can. Nodding towards their destination, he says, "So, you're from out of town, huh?"

Dmitri adjusted his loose kerchief, keeping his hair and fleas secure. (To clarify, he does not, and never had a hood. Wherever did I get that idea from?) His eyes were fixed on the ground ahead of him, noting distantly that the rags he was wearing were itching more than usual today. What with his magic, the uncleaned habitat of his clothing must be a utopia for mold spores. The fur in his jacket would surely be green by the end of the week.

Noting that his guide had said something, he quickly nodded in reply.
Thankfully, it was becoming easier to talk now that he's had some recent practice, and he followed up the thought with "Small farm."

They step out of the thinning crowd, entering a side-street. He can spot the blacksmith's door up ahead. Dusting off his weathered clothing, he wonders at his appearance. Would this do for negotiation? Perhaps more sophisticated attire would have been better for the occasion. Well, it would have to do for now, he decided. If he can leverage this man's position as a customer, he might just be able to not only catch his man, but perhaps even catch some additional coin while he was at it.

His mind racing with possibilities, he turns to the beggar. "You're a farmer, huh? Looks like produce has been selling very well this year", Erik says, gesturing towards the beggar's wallet. "What do you grow? Looks to be a living."

The man does not answer, and Erik takes a moment to look this eyesore of a man once over. He was such scum, filthy like a stray, inside and out. He had the manners of a dog, with the look of one, too! And he had so much coin. The amount he was carrying could feed a man for a month. It could feed Erik for a month, too, if he played his cards right. He felt the hatred rise in his throat, threatening to choke him. Filthy scum he was, yet there were worse. Those who tried to hide their filth with their glittering luxuries and their cleanliness, they were no different from this man. He scowls, and smothering his anger, he pushes further towards the shop.

Dmitri did not have a response to the man's probing questions and they had arrived at the door and the moment had passed. He pulled his coat tight against himself self-consciously, ever fidgeting. Still, perhaps silence was better than any response he could have come up with for ignorance and lack of direction.

His fingertips were hardly calloused and evenly toned, denying the expected image of a farmer's hands, so often ravaged by the elements in this cold state. However, when he gripped the half-frozen cast iron door handle, he swung it open firmly, breaking through some of the ice that had settled between the frame from the temperature difference between the forge indoors and the ice outside. Perhaps his flesh stuck painfully to the metal for the briefest of moments, but he paid it no mind and stepped through the threshold, holding the path clear for the man behind him.

The door slams shut behind them as they walk into a small and squat room. The stone brick of the walls is decorated with various dangling chains, and a single oil lamp hangs overhead. Over at the end of the room, there is a sturdy wooden counter, behind which a few finished implements lie, glinting in the dim light. The air is acrid and hazy, and Erik's chest itches unpleasantly with each breath. Somewhere further in the building, beyond the counter, he can spot a bright light emanating and hears the rhythmic pounding of a hammer. Looking to the beggar, he motions for him to step forward.

Dmitri steps forth with neither hesitation nor tact. He half trips over a loose ceiling bolt once he sets a foot down the second time, and the smith's focus snaps up at the sound.

"Ah, it is you again. And a friend?" The smith grunts, careful to now remove his work from the coals lest the metal melt away while he is distracted.

Dmitri nods, making a beeline for where he knows the common tools are kept, intending to pick out this month's purchases.

Seeing the blacksmith approach, Erik quickly blows out the single hanging oil lantern. Further back in the building, there is a squealing of hinges as the forge is slammed shut, and a thick rustling of cloth as it is thrown over the grate. In the sudden darkness, he moves silently, picking his way through the now pitch-black forge in a practiced choreography of steps.

Taking his position, he counts to ten and waits for the blacksmith's cue. As a the light of one-and-a-half dozen candles flickers to life, he leaps to his feet and sparks his lantern. A dozen other figures in the corners of the room mirror his actions as they all cry out: "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DMITRI!"

The room is suddenly awash with light and action! The blacksmith presents a glorious three-tiered chocolate cake in his arms, a half-dozen candles lined on each layer. Two men begin tossing streams of multicolored paper and open bottles of dye through the air, filling the room with festive colors. A elaborately-dressed bard picks out an energetic ditty on his sackbut. One lady twists open a cracker with a POP! and crowns the peasant of honor with the resulting paper hat. The blacksmith yells out in glee as the cake sails through the air, landing with a soft splat over Dmitri's head and neck.
The remainder, Erik included, begin an elaborate traditional dance number, whilst chanting,

"Oh, ye son of a bitch, ye got real old, congrats to you!
Ye dun did good, survived and such, congrats to you, hurray!
Yer ugly and filthy and dirty and reek,
but faced with yer charms every lass becomes weak!
Yer dumb as a brick and ye don't ever speak,
but not every man thinks of you as a freak!
We're here, O here, to dance around and sing along,
A la-dee-da, la-dee-da-day,
A hum-diddly ba-doo-da-biddle-flam hey!
Oh, ye son of a bitch, ye got real old, congrats to you!
Ye dun did good, survived and such, congrats to you, hurray!"

Finishing with a coordinated flourish of their hands, they all laugh giddily as the blacksmith kneels, solemnly offering the sugar-caked Dmitri a massive two-handed runeblade with (+2) to farming ability.
